Our profile artist this month is Robyn King, textile artist and painter.

Can you describe your artistic style? What is your preferred medium, and why?

My art practice is varied. I paint on fabric, watercolour, acrylic on canvas, drawing on paper and embroidery. I have no preferred medium, just dabble in anything to hand.

What motivates you as an artist

My motivation is sporadic at best. I find the necessity to paint for the arts co-operative usually gets me inspired for a while, then it’s back on the couch reading.

Describe the best piece of art you have created (pic here?)

The piece I consider my best work is an acrylic, mixed media painting on canvas that I gifted to a friend, and whenever I visit her it gives me great pleasure to see it.

What artists inspire you and where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by John Wolesley, Fred Williams and Howard Arkley to name a few.

How do you learn new skills and/or techniques?

I like to visit galleries and see other artist’s work. I would like my work to be more expressive and freer, that is something I am working on.

What has been the most challenging and rewarding part of being an artist

The weather is the most challenging thing for my fabric painting. The humidity tends to make the paint unruly.

What do you like to do when you’re not creating art?

Reading is a great pleasure, I like to garden and go bush.

Can you describe your studio/workspace and your favourite time of day to create.

I have several spaces for working. A multipurpose shed for fabric painting, a corner desk for watercolour and painting on canvas, and the couch for embroidery.

What is your favourite tool that you can’t do without.

Good brushes
