Nikki Sporri

Nikki is a contemporary painter based in Far North Queensland, where the colour, heat, and energy of tropical life continually find their way into her work. Her paintings are shaped by rhythm, instinct, and layering, and by a deep connection to the natural world around her, from dense rainforest and tangled growth to dry creek beds, seed pods, shifting light, and her eternal fascination with flowers and colour.

She paints intuitively, letting works evolve by building layers, obscured, sanded back, reworked, and sometimes left alone just long enough to reveal their story. Words often appear in her paintings too, partly hidden, scratched through, or buried beneath the surface.

Alongside her art practice, Nikki works in environmental compliance, which requires intense focus, precision and attention to detail. Although it seems far removed from painting, that way of thinking has quietly influenced her creative process. Structure, balance, and discernment sit beneath the surface of the work, holding space for expression, movement, and play. And occasionally a partial formula may appear in a layer.

Before painting became her primary creative focus, Nikki founded the clothing label Monsoons and Mangoes in 2006. Over the following 15 years, the label achieved global sales and became an important part of her creative life. Working in textiles helped shape her strong, personal sense of colour, layering, and design, laying much of the foundation for the visual language that now runs through her painting practice.

Her work sits within contemporary painting, though it often carries traces of landscape, foliage, memory, weather, and language. She is drawn to pieces that feel alive, paintings that hold energy and atmosphere rather than spelling everything out. Much of her work is about suggestion, feeling, and the beauty of what is partially hidden. She enjoys the tension between the wild and the deliberate, and in making work that feels both intuitive and resolved.

At its heart, Nikki’s practice is about noticing, responding, and allowing space for something unexpected to emerge. Each painting becomes a record of that process, full of small decisions that slowly gather into something whole.
