Diane Lignier

Diane is an emerging ceramic artist working from her studio on the Tablelands.
Working with clay was something Diane explored about two years ago. Diane was
looking for an outlet away from a busy full-time job. Diane took a four-week
introductory pottery class and has never looked back. Diane has completed further
courses in Cairns and online and continues to engage in learning her craft.

She is inspired by the vibrant landscapes of Far North Queensland and her work
reflects the colours, textures, and rhythms of the tropics. Using mid-fire clays and a
mix of commercial glazes, stains, and handmade glazes, she explores how materials can echo the natural world. Curiosity guides her process—each piece becomes a small discovery shaped by the interaction of clay, heat, and patience. Through ceramics, she aims to capture the feeling of being immersed in this rich environment and the quiet stories held within its landscapes. Her work is an ongoing journey, a dialogue between material and environment, guided by curiosity, wonder, and a deep respect for the natural world.

Diane primarily works with mid-fire clays, firing to cone 5–6 in an electric kiln. Diane uses and eclectic mix of clays with each chosen for its distinct character and the way it interacts with glazes, stains, and textures. White clays offer clarity and brightness, allowing colours to lift; red clays bring an earthy warmth and depth; and dark clays create strong contrasts and a grounding presence in the finished work.

Her hands-on, inquisitive approach creates work that reflects both the natural world and the dynamic processes behind it.
