If the practical stuff we own is attractive, simple, perhaps quirky, it will capture attention and be a reminder that even basic daily tasks need to be undertaken mindfully and lovingly. Simple articles made with beautiful materials, used daily, become favourites.
Choosing simple things that will inhabit your space and knock a bit of that humdrum out of everyday life is rewarding. Making them is a buzz for me, too….
Beautiful wood is very hard to come by. Nowadays I use recycled timber, and (thankfully) more forest is being protected and forest destruction is being throttled back. Recycling reclaims old wood, usually from unserviceable furniture. New articles can then be made, though every iteration of recycling means there will be a smaller recycled outcome.
Occasionally I get enough timber to build something sizeable, but mostly the pieces I salvage are fated to make small things. Luckily there’s a lot of desirable useful, small stuff that can be made. I tend to keep each bit of wood until I realise its obvious calling, and it gets rebirthed as something completely different, with a fair bit of sawdust on the side.
