Glynis Lee
Born in Innisfail, North Queensland of Chinese ancestry, Glynis studied and worked in Townsville before moving to Darwin, Northern Territory in the 1990s.
Art background/training
Following a career change, Glynis studied textile printing, printmaking and visual arts at Charles Darwin University. Refining her printmaking skills, Glynis undertook an Honours internship at Northern Editions Printmaking studio, continuing employment as an editioning printmaker while culminating her formal education with a practice-based doctorate. She also taught printmaking and screen-printing.
Artist statement/ philosophy / influences
The philosophy of Glynis’s art work is to convey emotion, ideas and thinking through imagery and layers, investigating a sense of belonging in multiple places while exploring cultural and environmental connections. Glynis is inspired by her surroundings, particularly in the natural environment, from microcosms to colours, patterns, sounds, light and shadow. Her imagery is generally subtle, but may convey hidden meanings as can be found in traditional Chinese paintings where symbolism is common in elements of the natural environment. In addition, Glynis’s interests include art and music as therapy and she enjoys the meditative aspects of some repetitive artistic techniques and processes.
Description of work processes and material use
Working predominantly in printmaking and textile art, Glynis is also interested in incorporating music and sound, and enjoys the meditative aspects of repetitive processes such as painting Chinese calligraphy strokes. An enthusiasm for innovative print expressions has led Glynis’s research into creating prints in 3-dimensional forms. Besides printmaking, Glynis’s studio practice includes silk paper and felt sculptures, artist books, natural dyeing, encaustic monotypes, watercolour, audio-visual and installation work.
